Dr. Watson's was one of the players' hangouts. It closed down for a while but is now operating as "Doc Watson's" at the original location. ***UPDATE*** Doc Watson's is now "TJ Mulligans."
This video is from the 1970 Cup Final replay between Chelsea and Leeds United. It is considered to be one of the roughest and dirtiest matches ever played. This clip shows future Memphis Rogues manager Eddie McCreadie (3) of Chelsea hammer Leeds United's Billy Bremner. Ah' the good old days! Crappy pitch, plain uniforms, BLACK cleats, and bad ass players! I miss those days.
Mike Stankovic (4) is beaten to the ball by the Chicago Sting's Greg Ryan. The game was played on June 24, 1980 at Comiskey Park in Chicago and saw the Sting win 2-0.
35 years ago today, April 8, 1978, the Memphis Rogues played their first home game at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, losing to the Philadelphia Fury 3-2 in overtime. The photo above shows the Rogues' Neil Smillie moving past Fury defender John Dempsey.
This sign was placed outside of the main entrance to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. It was there from 1978 to 1980 and was taken away after the team was sold and moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I don't know if it went to Calgary or was discarded.
Anyone who ever went to a Memphis Rogues home game will remember that the Johnny Rivers' version of "Memphis, Tennessee" was second only to the Rogues' Fight Song. Every time I hear it I think of those home games. Enjoy the clip!
