TOM NEVERS, 1979

Tom Nevers (C) is challenged by Tony Field (R) as Jorge Berrio looks on in this rare photo from a Rogues practice session.  This photo was Taken at Tim McCarver Stadium which was the home of the AA Memphis Chicks baseball team.  The Chicks moved to Jackson, Tennessee many years ago and the stadium was later torn down.  The Rogues used Tim McCarver Stadium, The Liberty Bowl, and Overton Park as practice locations.  The Mid-South Coliseum was used for indoor season practice. There may have been other locations so if anyone has information, please let me know.

WAY BEFORE THEY WERE ROGUES: CELEBRITY EDITION

In the summer of 1967 club teams from around the world were invited to represent selected U.S. cities in the NPSL (National Professional Soccer League). This was an effort to boost the poularity of soccer in the United States.  The Wolverhampton Wanderers of England were chosen to represent Los Angeles and became the "L.A. Wolves."  Among these players was future Rogue Bobby Thomson.  The photo above was taken by the pool at the Sheraton Hotel in Los Angeles.  The Wolves players shown are (LtoR) Les Wilson, Dave Wagstaffe, Ernie Hunt, Graham Hawkins, and Bobby Thomson.  The shirtless, jeans wearer in the front is Davy Jones of the Monkees.  Jones knew Dave Wagstaffe from his early days in Manchester.  When the players arrived in Los Angeles Davy Jones met up with them and spent time in their company.  They were treated to shopping trips and studio visits to watch tapings of the Monkees show.  The L.A. Wolves finished their U.S. season by winning the NPSL championship.

ROGUES PRE-SEASON vs COLORADO, 1978

Recently Dave Morrison at nasljerseys.com sent me this article about a Rogues vs Colorado Caribou pre-season game in 1978.  This game was played March 25, 1978 in Colorado Springs and saw the Rogues lose 2-0 to the Caribou.  During the season, the Rogues did the sweep of Colorado, beating them 2-0 at Memphis and 1-0 in Colorado.  Very special thanks to Dave Morrison for the article.

BILL MISHALOW, 1979

Bill Mishalow makes a save against the Drillers as Tom Nevers (L), John Faulkner (C), and Edmonton's Alex Schoenmaker (R) look on.  Memphis lost 4-1.  The photo caption incorrectly identifies Mishalow as Gene DuChateau.  It also says this is action from the first "quarter" of the game.
